Explained · Manglik dosha

Manglik dosha: what it means when a chart shows it

Manglik dosha, also called Mangal or Kuja dosha, is a label given to a chart when Mars sits in certain houses. This page is for families who have been told a son or daughter is Manglik and want to know how much it matters.

Questions people bring

  • My daughter is Manglik. Must she marry only a Manglik?
  • An astrologer said the dosha needs an expensive puja. Is that true?
  • The boy's family is asking whether she is Manglik. What do we tell them?

The consultation

What you can expect to leave with

  • Whether the chart is Manglik at all, and by which definition
  • Which cancellations apply, and from which source
  • The 7th house, its lord, Venus and Jupiter alongside Mars
  • How the two charts sit together when a match is being considered

What the term means

A chart is called Manglik when Mars sits in certain houses. The list most used in North India is the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th. The verse B.V. Raman quotes in his Muhurtha gives the 2nd, 12th, 4th, 7th and 8th, and leaves out the 1st. Many astrologers today count all six.

Sources also differ on where to count from. Some count from the ascendant only. Others count from the Moon and Venus as well. Raman notes that the dosha is held to be weakest from the ascendant, stronger from the Moon and strongest from Venus.

The arithmetic

Six houses out of twelve is half. Counted from the ascendant alone, roughly one chart in two is Manglik. Count from the Moon and Venus as well, and a large majority of charts qualify on at least one count.

Something this common cannot, on its own, settle how a marriage will go. B.V. Raman wrote that Kuja dosha does not deserve the attention paid to it, and that it has stopped many suitable marriages. I treat the word Manglik as a piece of information. It is not a verdict.

The cancellations

These are the cancellations cited most often. Mars in its own sign, Aries or Scorpio, or exalted in Capricorn. Mars joined or aspected by Jupiter; Raman counts conjunction with the Moon too. Jupiter or Venus in the ascendant. Both partners Manglik.

Raman also lists sign exceptions for each house, such as Mars in the 2nd in Gemini or Virgo, and Mars in Leo or Aquarius in any house. The lists are not identical in every source. The popular belief that the dosha ends after the age of 28 does not appear in the classical texts usually cited, and I do not rely on it.

Why families get frightened

There are three reasons. The old verses use severe language. Software prints 'Manglik: Yes' with no context. And some people sell remedies on the strength of that fear. Rituals such as kumbh vivah exist. I do not sell them and I do not ask anyone to perform them.

A proportionate reading asks which house and sign Mars is in, how strong it is, what aspects it, and whether a cancellation applies. Then I look at the 7th house, its lord, Venus and the current dasha. I read the other chart the same way. After that I say plainly how much weight the matter deserves.

Mars in the six houses

This is what tradition associates with each placement, stated mildly, and what I check before giving it weight.

Mars inThe traditional concernA proportionate reading
1st houseTemperament. A quick temper and a wish to have one's own way. Mars aspects the 7th from here. Some lists do not count this house at all. It is often read as a direct, energetic nature. I check the sign and any aspect of Jupiter.
2nd houseSpeech and family. Sharp words tend to cause friction at home.North Indian lists usually leave this house out. Raman excepts Gemini and Virgo. I read it with the 2nd lord.
4th housePeace at home. Restlessness in domestic life. Mars aspects the 7th from here.Raman excepts Aries and Scorpio. I check the 4th lord and the Moon before saying anything.
7th houseThe partnership itself. Arguments and a contest over who leads. This placement is taken most seriously because the 7th is the house of marriage. It still depends on the sign, the 7th lord, Jupiter and the partner's chart.
8th houseThe old verses are harshest here. In plain terms: strain over shared money, in-laws or sudden change.I do not read it as a prediction of harm. Raman excepts Sagittarius and Pisces. Strength and aspects decide the weight.
12th houseExpenses, distance and less ease in private life. Mars aspects the 7th from here.Raman excepts Taurus and Libra. I check the 12th lord and Venus.

What astrology can't tell you here

Astrology cannot tell you that a marriage will fail or succeed because of Mars. A Manglik chart is one factor among many, and I will not predict harm to anyone from it.
