Sade Sati: what it is, when you are told it has begun

Sade Sati is Saturn's transit through the sign before your birth Moon sign, the Moon sign itself and the sign after it, about seven and a half years in all. This page is for anyone who has been told it has started, or is about to, and wants to understand it in proportion.

Questions people bring

  • I am told my Sade Sati has started. Should I be worried?
  • A pandit said the next seven years will be hard. Is that true?
  • Do I really need the puja and the ring I was quoted for?

What you can expect to leave with

  • Whether you are in Sade Sati or a Dhaiya now, and the dates of each phase
  • Saturn's strength and role in your birth chart, and the condition of your Moon
  • The dasha running alongside, and which areas of life it points to
  • Which decisions tend to suit this period, and which are better taken slowly

What Sade Sati is

Sade Sati means seven and a half. It is the name for Saturn's transit through three signs in a row: the sign before your birth Moon sign, the Moon sign itself, and the sign after it. Saturn stays about two and a half years in each. Together that makes about seven and a half years.

Saturn takes roughly 29.5 years to go round the zodiac. So most people meet Sade Sati two or three times in a life. Methods of counting differ. Most astrologers count by sign. Some count 45 degrees either side of the Moon, so the start date can shift by some months.

The three phases

The phases are commonly called rising, peak and setting. In the first, Saturn is in the 12th sign from the Moon. People often report more expenses, a change of place and lighter sleep. In the second, Saturn is in the Moon sign. People often report heavier responsibility, a serious mood and slower results. In the third, Saturn is in the 2nd from the Moon. Money, family matters and speech tend to need attention.

Most sources call the middle phase the heaviest. Some say it depends on the Moon sign. I accept neither until I have seen the chart.

Why it is feared, and what moderates it

Saturn is the slowest of the visible planets, traditionally read as the planet of delay, duty and consequence. The Moon is read as the mind. So a long Saturn transit over the Moon came to be read as a long test of the mind. The fear grew from there, and it is also sold. Oil offerings, rituals and gemstones are widely marketed for Sade Sati. I sell none of them.

The tradition is more measured. Three things are weighed: Saturn's strength and role in the birth chart, the running dasha, and the condition of the natal Moon. For Taurus and Libra ascendants Saturn is traditionally a yogakaraka. B.V. Raman taught that transits are read with the birth chart and Ashtakavarga, not alone.

Work done in these years, and the Dhaiya

Many people do their most solid, lasting work during Sade Sati. Degrees are finished, businesses are built, homes are made, offices are held. Saturn is traditionally read as rewarding steady effort. These years tend to suit slow, structured work more than quick gains.

The Dhaiya is a shorter transit of about two and a half years, when Saturn is in the 4th or the 8th sign from the Moon. The 4th is often called Kantaka Shani or Ardhashtama Shani, and the 8th Ashtama Shani. The terms are not used uniformly. Some authors apply Kantaka Shani to Saturn in the 4th, 7th and 10th. It is read the same way, with the chart.

The three phases at a glance

Durations are approximate, because Saturn's retrograde motion can take it back into a sign for some months.

What astrology can't tell you here

A reading cannot fix the date of an event or promise that a year will go well or badly. I give no guarantees and I do not sell remedies for Sade Sati.
